Dipa Karmakar, who retired at a relatively early age of 31, shocked and delighted everyone during the 2016 Rio Olympics. She made it to the Final of vault competition as the first Indian woman gymnast ever and returned in a very respectable fourth position.

Sports fans across the Nation and even around the globe was in amazement when Dipa showed such great performance and a die-hard determined talent in Rio. Apart from bringing glory to the country, the achievement of Karmakar inspired other budding gymnasts across the country, this clearly show the oneness that sports bring.

Even though she missed out on winning an Olympic medal, to say that Karmakar earned something is an understatement as she did quite well. Remarkably, she finished 0.15 points short of the bronze medal but her performance made her reputation as one of the best gymnasts in the world uncontested.

The vault of “Produnova,” which is one of the most perilous, was performed regularly by her ability and great determination, which while did attract her repute as well quite a few regards from purists of the sport.

Greatest highlight of Karmakar’s career was the “Produnova”, which is a dangerous vault that very few gymnasts are willing to try. Already in her professional career, she was able to perform this particular vault successfully on multiple distinct occasions.

But what else could Karmakar do but to bring that Olympic medal home, which he did? She achieved the feat by being the first Indian woman gymnast, who dared undertake the stunt, to win a vault gold at the Asian Women’s Artistic Gymnastics Championship at Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

This has left Indian gymnastics with big vacuum especially following the Karmakar’s retirement that would be difficult to be filled in the next year. She has sold herself, her time and a sweet disposition that is useful when inspiring other young gymnasts all over the world to realize their potentiality.

Though it cannot be said that she has won an Olympic medal which is the highest, there are still legacies which will be there for generations to come. It is obvious that whenever the Indian gymnasts are trained in the future they will always remember the accomplishments and the resolve of Karmakar.
